How often should I really be exercising to see results?

How often do you really need to exercise to see results, and are the official guidelines actually realistic?
You might have seen exercise recommendations online or in posters at the GP surgery and thought, “There’s no way I can do that.” If that sounds familiar, you are definitely not alone. Let’s look at what the guidelines say, what they actually mean, and how to approach them without feeling overwhelmed.

Because a picture often explains things better than words…

When people first see the guidelines for the average adult, the reaction is often something like, “Bloody hell, I’m never going to manage that!” And that reaction makes complete sense. What many people miss is this crucial point: these guidelines are not what you are expected to be doing right now. They are something to work up to over time.

The mistake many people make is asking the wrong question. Instead of asking, “How on earth do I do all of that today?”, a far more helpful question is “What is the first tiny step towards doing that?” That might be one short walk a week, one gentle class, or just getting used to moving your body again. Small steps done consistently are what lead to results.

It’s also important to remember that your exercise does not have to be done all in one go. You can spread it across the week in whatever way fits your life. Ten minutes here and there still counts. It all adds up, and your body responds to the total amount of movement you do, not whether it happened in a single session.

If you are a beginner and want a supportive place to start, we run exercise classes specifically designed for beginners, where the focus is on building confidence and consistency rather than pushing to extremes. You can find out more by clicking here.

If you are living with a chronic injury, long-term illness, or limited mobility, we have options for you too. Our rehab exercise classes (click here) and rehab gym sessions (click here) are designed to help you move safely and progressively.
